Associated Food Stores Inc. said Thursday it had completed its previously announced acquisition of the Macey's food stores in Utah.
Under the reorganization, John Allen has been named the new president of the supermarket chain with former owner Ken Macey becoming chairman of the board. Fred Ferguson has been named vice president. Both Allen and Ferguson are longtime Macey's employees. The Macey's name will remain on the stores and most retail functions will be unchanged. Associated said customers will notice little difference in the operation.
Waldo "Walt" Macey opened the first Macey's in Rose Park in 1947 and soon afterward another store in Logan. There are now eight Macey's stores along the Wasatch Front from Logan to Spanish Fork. Ken Macey bought the business from his father in 1986.
Macey's is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Associated, an independent grocery co-op based in Salt Lake City that services 600 grocers throughout the Mountain West.
