Alfred Kenneth Shellinger, a 5 year resident of Friendship Manor, died Nov. 20 of a heart condition.
Born in 1915 in the Yukon, he came out to Palo Alto, CA, where, following his father, he attended Stanford University for a degree in Mining Engineering. After working Anaconda Copper in Chile, he returned to Stanford to obtain his Ph.D. in Metallurgical Engineering. During the 1950's he was a professor at Stanford but also worked a number of years for Cerro Corporation in Peru. Subsequently he spent 3 years in Ohio with M.A. Hanna Co. before moving to Salt Lake in 1961 to work for Kennecott Copper. In the 1970's he went to Perth, Australia where he spent 22 years both consulting and teaching in the mining profession.He is survived in Perth by his wife, Joannie; and in the U.S. by his daughter Nancy Huges of St. Louis; and his sons, David Schellinger in Palo Alto and John Schellinger in Salt Lake City. His wish was to be buried next to his beloved first wife, Edith, mother of his children.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 23 at Redwood Memorial Estates Cemetery, 6800 S. Redwood Rd. Friends may call one hour prior to services at Redwood Memorial Estates.
