After every unleashed laugh at 2 in the morning and every sidewalk chalk escapade, many of my neighbors sigh, "Teenagers have too much exuberance for me."

As some roll eyes and turn away, many teenagers are taking the criticism in stride. "We're the Class of 2000 and we're going somewhere," exclaims Mari Moore, an up-and-coming graduate of the millennium who is excited for the future. Will the Class of 2000 make a splash in the coming millennium? Margaret Mead believes: "Never doubt that a group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever does."

The Class of 2000 is ready to leap into the upcoming millennium with more energy than ever.

There has been energy building up behind this class for years as it prepares to launch the world into the new information/electronic age.

There is energy in the voluntarism spirit that abounds among teenagers today. Some assisted-living facilities are eager for young people to play checkers with the elderly or just visit with them. There are numerous opportunities for teenagers to volunteer, and there is certainly not a lack of enthusiasm.

Allison Hadley, a senior at Viewmont High School, says, "When I have a bad day, I can go and volunteer and it makes me feel so good. It makes me realize how much I am blessed with."

Teenagers put just as much energy into school spirit as they do schoolwork. You can be sure that the excitement will continue into future homes, families and communities.

There is energy in teenagers' hopes and dreams. An aspiration to become an astronaut certainly does not go unnoticed, as there are many opportunities for young people to pursue whatever they put their minds to.

This enormous burst of enthusiasm among teenagers takes form in many different ways. An outlandish and bizarre style to adults may only be fresh creativity taking root in adolescents.

For every drive-by shooting, there is a young boy who spoke the last kind words to a stranger. For every act of violence, there is a beautiful watercolor painting being created. For every disillusioned person viewing the youth, there is a teenager who proves them wrong.

Yes, the Class of 2000 has the energy to pioneer whatever path the millennium weaves. The adults will surely be running to keep up.
