BOUNTIFUL -- Some 45,000 copies of the new Davis County Directory, South Edition, are currently being distributed by Carr Printing to residences and businesses between Farmington and North Salt Lake City.
Lloyd Carr, president of Carr Printing, said the 39th edition of the new telephone directory is being mailed to businesses but delivered to the doorstep of homes."It has changed," Carr said of the new South Directory.
Now the 10-by-7 3/4-inch phone book includes countywide telephone numbers -- not just those for South Davis County.
Carr said the north version of the directory is published each August and last year's version also included the countywide telephone listing.
With the south Davis County directory being updated each February and the north version published each August, Carr said Davis County telephone listings are being revised every six months -- twice as often as with other telephone directories.
"It's an indication of our shopping patterns," Carr said as the reason for the countywide listings.
Want to find all the restaurants in Davis County? They're all listed in the book, along with wedding and other services.
Carr said despite the new inclusive phone listings, the book contains a yellow pages that caters more to the south end of the county, so businesses and customers can find what services they need in their area more readily.
"It's customized more for the area," he said, explaining businesses can save money by having a large advertisement in the book for their side of the county and a smaller ad for the other edition.
An extensive survey by Dan Jones and Associates in the mid-1990s revealed that 99 percent of Davis County residents had a Carr phone directory in their home and 96 percent of them reported using it more or equally to the US WEST Directory.
"It's a family business," Carr said.
Carr Printing started business in 1890. In 1960, US WEST ceased publishing a small Bountiful-to-Farmington-area telephone directory and began including south Davis County in its Salt Lake telephone book. Carr said that's when his company expanded and began publishing its own local directory.
However, it wasn't easy at first. He said it wasn't possible to just buy the phone listings from US WEST in those days -- you had to do your own list from scratch.
Today Carr's 65 full-time employees combine efforts to print the directory. It also includes what is widely known as the best map of South Davis County.
The directory's phone listings also include the names of spouses, making it easier to find the right household. A special coupon section is also a popular feature of the book.
Carr said his company does research to determine what people and businesses want in the book. As such, he said a numerical listing of county phone numbers, matching them to homes and businesses, is not included.
However, he said Carr now has a Web site, (carrdirectories.com), where such information is available to the public.
Anyone in south Davis County who does not receive a new directory by early March can contact Carr Printing at 295-2323 to obtain a free copy. Those outside the area may purchase a book for $4.
