OREM -- After a six-month renovation project, Deseret Book's University Mall store now has an additional 5,500 square feet of space, a new decor, as well as increased display space and additional room for a wider selection of LDS and national products.
Deseret Book has been a mainstay business in the mall since its opening in 1972. Beginning as a small shop, it has continuously expanded, and is now one of the largest in the chain of the company's stores. Even during the renovation process it was the top store in sales, said Ronald Millett, president of Deseret Book.Store manager Gregg Finn says customers will find the newly decorated and larger store convenient for shopping and browsing. The store also has an expanded inventory to go with its mainstays of scriptures, books, music and CDs. An enhanced supply of LDS literature, pictures and teaching aids are available. It will offer a "more pleasant experience for everyone. It was nice before, but is better now," Finn said.
Shoppers can also find a wide array of books on a variety of subjects, from gardening to science fiction, animal care to atoms. Children's books are also in abundance. Greeting cards, writing stationery, office supplies, playful stuffed animals and T-shirts are also available.
About 18 months ago, Deseret Book rented space across the corridor from the mall store and opened a Christmas gift shop. It proved successful and was continued.
Finn said the owners and management of Deseret Book had felt for some time that expanding the store's inventory of sideline items -- gifts, statues, beautiful works of art, framing supplies, etc. -- would compliment the business.
"People are buying gift things for their houses," Finn said. "They want a better atmosphere in their homes."
By being better able to display the artwork, statues and other items not related to books and music, the items are "more shoppable." A jewelry center has also been established, as the CTR rings, tie clips, necklaces, etc. have also proved to be big sellers.
An area also has been created to offer classes, workshops and demonstrations. To start off, classes will be offered to help with the use of GospelLink software. There will also be classes for those who enjoy scrapbooking and framing, as well as other home-decor activities. Other instruction may be added as requested.
These classes are free, will run through April general conference time and will be given by professionals. Those interested can call 224-0055 to sign up. Seating is limited, so early reservations are recommended.
Book signings are standard at all Deseret Book stores and will continue at the mall store. Other services include cold laminating, imprinting and gift-wrapping.
