A man accused of shooting his ex-wife in the parking lot of a Sandy bowling alley last month has been charged with murder.

The first-degree felony charge against Shayne E. Todd, 27, was filed Tuesday in 3rd District Court. Todd's ex-wife, Stephanie, died Feb. 28 from a gunshot wound to the head.Stephanie Todd, of Lehi, agreed to meet with her former husband that night to retrieve some personal items, court documents state. They met in the parking lot of the Brunswick Bowling Alley, 10535 S. State, where they got into an argument. Stephanie Todd was apparently standing near the driver's side of Shayne Todd's vehicle when the fight began. As the argument escalated, court documents indicate Shayne Todd attempted to drive off while Stephanie clung to the vehicle.

A short time later, bystanders heard a gunshot and saw Stephanie fall to the ground, the charges state. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Prosecutors say Shayne Todd had a loaded handgun in his lap during the argument. After Todd turned himself into police, he "indicated that the gun was in his hand when it went off and agreed that his finger probably pulled the trigger," according to the charges.

In addition to the murder charge, Shayne Todd also faces one count of possession of a dangerous weapon by a restricted person, a second-degree felony. Shayne was released from prison 12 days before Stephanie Todd's death. He was on parole for a 1989 aggravated assault conviction.
