HOUSE HONORS HOULE: Mountain View coach Dave Houle was honored with a lifetime achievement award by the Utah House of Representatives Wednesday.
Last Saturday, Houle's Bruins won their fourth straight 5A girls basketball championship and seventh of the '90s. It also gave Houle his 44th state high school championship, which is a national record.Houle has coached the Bruins' girls basketball team, boys and girls track teams, and boys and girls cross country teams to a 795-80 record in his prolific career. Last school year, he set another national record by guiding all five of those teams to state titles.
UTAHNS OFF TO OREGON: Five female high school athletes from Utah have signed national letters of intent to play their respective sports at Oregon colleges.
Bingham High's Heather Gilmore has announced that she will play volleyball for the University of Oregon beginning next season.
Gilmore, a 6-foot outside hitter, was a two-time first-team all-stater for the Miners. She finished second in Utah with 747 career kills and was twice named Region 2 MVP.
"Heather had a great prep career coming out of Utah," said Oregon coach Cathy Nelson. "She is a great athlete and will have the opportunity to fight for playing time right away."
Four Utah student-athletes also signed to play soccer with Portland State University. They are: West Jordan's Elishia Miltenberger; East's Jamie Steffensen and Sarah Graham; and Rebecca Blum of Olympus.
Miltenberger, a midfielder, is a two-time all-stater and was the Region 2 MVP as a junior. Blum is also a midfielder and she was named honorable mention all-state this past season.
Steffensen, a midfielder, and Graham, a defender, were All-Region 5 selections this season. They are also Olympic Development Program players.
BASEBALL STARS: Uintah's Clint "Fudge" Peterson and Skyline's Corland Wilson have been named honorable mention 1999 TPX Louisville Slugger All-Americans by Collegiate Baseball. Peterson is a senior left-handed pitcher and Wilson is a junior shortstop.
HIGHLAND, T-VILLE LOSE COACHES: After five seasons as boys basketball coach, Highland's Clark Godfrey is retiring from the court and in the classroom as a teacher. Godfrey coached for 34 years overall, 20 as a head coach.
Steve Shoell has also called it quits as the head basketball coach at Taylorsville. Shoell had coached the Warriors for four years.
Both coaches' schools lost in the first round of their respective state tournaments last week at Weber State.
DIXIE'S GRIDIRON GREAT: Dixie High junior Paul Fisher has been selected to the Top 100 Super Squad for the Class of 2000 by the National Football Report and Gridiron Greats magazines.
Fisher is the only Utahn to make the list. He is a 6-foot-8, 315-pound lineman who helped lead the Flyers to the 3A championship last season.
GIRLS ALL-REGION 4: Bonneville's Kelsy Stireman, who led her team to the 4A championship game, was named the Region 4 MVP by the league's coaches. Her teammate, Andra Boyce, was also selected as the region's defensive player of the year, while Weber's Ashley Hone was honored as newcomer of the year.
The Region 4 first team includes: Sally McEvoy, Logan; Mickey Folsom, Sky View; Texie Criddle, Fremont; Jessica Fowler, Fremont; Kristen McDougal, Bonneville; Kensie Nyman, Logan; and Lisa DeVries of Fremont.
The second team is comprised of: Jami Zilles, Mountain Crest; Lindsay Karren, Box Elder; Erin Wilson, Logan; Gretchen Fishburn, Fremont; Lisa Pratt, Weber; Amy Gustaveson, Mountain Crest; Ashlee Hunsaker, Mountain Crest; and Brinley Freeman of Bonneville.
Honorable mention honors go to Olivia Lester, Box Elder; Katie Miles, Roy; Lalani Unutoa, Roy; Katie Jensen, Sky View; Sonnet Udy, Logan; Melanie Jones, Weber; and Mountain Crest's Camille Olsen.
