DESERET NEWS, BERLIN, Jan. 30, 1933 (INS) -- Germany's new militant nationalism flamed into a pageant almost without parallel tonight as thousands of Nazi troops and war veterans swept through the streets of Berlin to celebrate the appointment of Adolf Hitler as chancellor of the nation.

Transformed within the space of a few hours from a tub-thumping aspirant for power hammering at seemingly impregnable walls, to the leading political figure in the country, prevented only by President Von Hindenburg's innate conservatism from becoming absolute dictator of a Nazi state, Hitler bore his mantle of prestige with dignity.Hitler, decked out in his brown khaki Nazi uniform, with an iron cross on his breast and the Swastika symbol on his left arm, viewed the pageant from a new wing of the (old chancellory in Under Den Linden.)

Through the 1930s, the Deseret News was filled with stories of Hitler's steady campaign for conquest in Europe. Soon after his rise to power, stories alerted Americans that Jews were being evicted from their homes, the prelude to the Holocaust that saw millions of their race eradicated.
