SURGERY TO SIDELINE VAN HORN: New Jersey Nets forward Keith Van Horn will miss the final two weeks of the NBA season after breaking his left thumb in Sunday night's victory over the Indiana Pacers.
Van Horn was injured blocking a shot by Reggie Miller late in the third quarter. Both players fell to the floor on the play, and Van Horn got up holding his hand. The thumb is displaced and will require surgery, said Dr. Charles Melone, a hand specialist.
WNBA'S LABOR STRIFE: The WNBA and the players' union failed to complete their collective bargaining agreement in talks Monday, although they reported progress in the labor dispute that forced the postponement of the league's draft, which was scheduled for Tuesday.
The sides met for about 8 1/2 hours and planned to resume discussions Tuesday afternoon. After a tentative deal fell apart late last week with each side blaming the other for introducing new terms at the last minute, the sides said they had moved closer to completing a deal.
Utah Starzz acting player rep Tammi Reiss said a conference call with players was scheduled for Tuesday. She said neither she nor other Starzz players were told beforehand that the players' association would change the deal from last week that the Starzz had all supported.
