ROSIE'S ANTI-NRA RANT KEEPS PHONES JINGLING

Rosie O'Donnell's rant against the National Rifle Association during an on-air debate with Tom Selleck sparked a rash of angry telephone calls to Kmart, a store chain the talk show hostess does commercials for that also sells guns.

O'Donnell apologized to Selleck, who has filmed a commercial for the NRA, after heated exchanges on O'Donnell's show last week. But the apologies didn't keep more than 200 people who oppose gun control from calling to complain, Kmart spokesman Steve Pagnani said.

Despite the calls, Kmart said it has no plans to fire O'Donnell as celebrity spokeswoman.

"We've discussed the issue . . . with her and we know her stance," Pagnani said. "We believe in safe and responsible sales, and she has a right to express her opinion."

'YOUNG, RESTLESS' TO GET A GUBERNATORIAL TOUCH

Jesse Ventura confesses he has a soft spot for soap operas, so he's tickled at the prospect of appearing on "The Young and The Restless."

Minnesota's governor says he got hooked on soaps during his days as a professional wrestler. He's been asked to play a bad guy dealing with the show's main character, Victor Newman.

Playing a villain appeals to Ventura, creatively.

"Being a good guy's boring," he said.

The governor sees similarities between soaps, pro wrestling and politics when it comes to people changing from good to evil and back again.

"They've got to hate you before they can love you," he said.

No date had been chosen for the appearance, said governor's spokesman John Wodele.

COWS 1, JOE MONTANA 0 IN HORSE DEMONSTRATION

Cows 1. Former San Francisco 49ers' quarterback Joe Montana 0.

Taking part in a cutting-horse demonstration Friday in Reno, Nev., to help kick off the 1999 Pacific Coast Cutting Horse Association Derby Classic and Challenge, the four-time Super Bowl champ proved he can ride a fast-moving, quick-turning cattle horse. But this time the cows were just a little faster.

"I thought, "OK, it'll probably be fun to watch, but it was a lot more exciting than I even imagined," Montana said. "If people like horses at all, once you've tried it, you're hooked."
