LAYTON -- Three seats on the City Council come up for re-election this fall, and at least one of the incumbents -- Brent Allen -- said he isn't likely to run again.
Another incumbent, Steve Curtis, said he will definitely seek a second term, while the third incumbent, Debra Ledkins, hasn't decided yet.Layton City Council hopefuls can officially declare their candidacy with the Layton City Recorders Office beginning July 15. The deadline to file is 5 p.m. on Aug. 16.
(Candidates have an extra day to file this year because the usual Aug. 15 deadline falls on a Sunday.)
"Eighteen years with the city is long enough," Allen said.
He spent 10 years on the Layton Planning Commission prior to his two terms on the council.
Allen said his leaning at this point is not to run again because he's always felt two terms on the council was enough.
Curtis said his first four years on the council have been a good experience and he's excited to be planning on running for a second term.
Ledkins said she's undecided at this time because of her busy schedule.
"Things are going so well" that she isn't ruling out a third term, though.
Ledkins was the city's biggest vote-getter in the 1995 election, while Allen finished second and Curtis third.
Starting in 1995, Layton city instituted a filing fee of $25 for each council and mayoral candidate. The council at the time believed the fee would stop people from filing who aren't really serious about the effort, or who run on a bet.
Has the filing fee worked as planned?
Statistics show that it might be.
Layton had nine candidates file for the City Council in the 1997 election. Six filed to run in 1995, a record 16 candidates in 1993 and 10 candidates in the 1991 council race.
