The sole purpose of a speeding bullet is to destroy anything in its path whether it be life, limb or property. Yes, there are other things in our possession that can destroy (cars, knives, drugs, baseball bats, fists, fire, etc.). But I can think of nothing that I possess that has a sole purpose such as that speeding bullet has.
A proliferation of guns will only put more speeding bullets in the air.I recently read a letter from a gun advocate bemoaning the fact that there wasn't a "permitted carrier" in the Genealogical Library who could have brought the shooter down early on. The theory: "The more concealed weapons we have in society, the safer we all will be."
Let's assume for a moment there were at least two permitted carriers in the library, each responding at different times from different locations in that facility. Number 1 hero sees the suspect with a gun in his had and returns fire. The second hero comes on the scene after following the sound of the shots and assumes there are two shooters and begins firing at No. 1 hero who then thinks there is an accomplice and again returns fire. Each new gun fills the air with potential collateral damage. Are we now safer? Of course not. We now have bullets coming from all directions with death and destruction written on each one of them.
Any person who is issued a permit to conceal should be POST certified and deputized with the badge (identification), authorization and responsibility that goes with any officer of the law. Any speeding bullets to protect the public should come from the weapons of highly trained and disciplined persons, not rag-tag vigilantes.
