A Layton man who was critically injured last month while cycling with five other people along U.S. 89 in Fruit Heights, Davis County, was moved out of intensive care Wednesday at University Hospital.

Brian Carlson, 29, whose left leg had to be amputated and who suffered multiple other injuries in the accident, was in fair condition Thursday, a hospital spokeswoman said.Carlson and two other cyclists were injured by a vehicle driven by Steven Ray Hudgens, 48, Salt Lake City, who was allegedly driving while under the influence of alcohol.

Maikel Wise, 29, Ogden, and Brookanne Mickelson, 28, also of Ogden, were also injured.

Hudgens has been charged with three counts of driving under the influence, a third-degree felony; driving on a denied license, a class B misdemeanor; and improper use of lanes, a class C misdemeanor. His bail was increased to $250,000 on May 26, and a preliminary hearing has been scheduled for June 22 in 2nd District Court in Farmington.
