Our loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, Dr. Rodney E. Alsop passed away Tuesday, June 22, 1999, in Independence, MO, after a courageous fight with cancer.
Rodney was born April 2, 1919, in Sandy, Utah to Charles Earl and Anna Elizabeth Hyler Alsop. After attending the University of Utah, he went on to serve an LDS Mission in the Eastern States. Immediately upon his return, he was inducted into the army in World War II. He attended officer's training at Fort Benning, Georgia. He married Madge Jackman September 3, 1943. They have five children from the marriage. Madge later died of cancer. He married Dorothy Lawson Black on July 21, 1967, in El Paso, Texas.Rodney graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractic and practiced as a Chiropractor for 48 years, in Salt Lake City, Utah, Phoenix, Arizona and Independence, Missouri.
He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints holding many responsible positions among which was a Bishopric Counselor, High Priest Group Leader, Music Director and teacher.
Rodney loved music and played the violin in the Independence Symphony. He and his wife Dorothy were in great demand as entertainers with their singing and 'Stories in Song' programs. He will be greatly missed for where ever he went he made life better for those around him.
Survivors include his wife Dorothy; his children, Don (Judy) Alsop, Ted (Linda) Alsop, Ruth Kunen, Larry Alsop, Janna (Tom) Larsen, 6 step children; Andy Black Jr., Deborah Black, Laurel (Mark) Munger, Danny (Nancy) Black, Connie (Frank) Cessor, Tom (Jerry) Black; 24 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, 4 sisters and 1 brother, Mae Wilde, La Rue Billeter, Dr. Donna Benson, Dr. Pearl Knight, Dr. Earl Alsop. Preceded in death by Madge, Parents, 2 brothers and three sisters, many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 26, at 11:00 a.m. at the Independence 2nd Ward, 705 West Walnut, Independence, MO. Viewing will be held Friday evening at the church from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and for one hour prior to the services in Saturday. Interment: Oak Ridge Memory Gardens, Independence, Mo.
