BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (AP) -- Former major league relief pitcher Tim Layana, part of the Cincinnati Reds' 1990 World Series team, died after a car broadsided his sport utility vehicle.

Layana and three passengers, including his brother, were on eastbound Highway 178 and were turning left onto Rancheria Road on Saturday around 4:15 p.m. when a 1982 Mercedes, also heading east, tried to pass slower traffic and hit Layana's Chevrolet Blazer. The Blazer flipped. Layana, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected.The foursome had been heading home from a charity golf tournament to raise money for juvenile diabetes, said another brother, John Layana.
