Let's make a deal -- Draft night is Wednesday and, as of press time, the Jazz still had three first-round picks. Unfortunately, there aren't three many can't-miss players in the entire draft. The Jazz should trade away their picks for future draft selections.
Huh? That's what everyone's trying to do?What if they threw in the rights to Jose Ortiz?
America's team -- Sure, the Jazz blew their chance. But it's hard to be too angry about the Spurs winning the title. Shaq wins a title, it's a bummer. But David Robinson? Avery Johnson? Tim Duncan?
May as well try cheering against Mr. Rogers.
Latin 101 -- Missed opportunities ...
In 1994 and '95, Houston stepped up and won titles while Michael Jordan chased the curveball. Now with Jordan gone for good, the Spurs got their championship. Moral to the story: Carpe Diem!
Which translated means "Get a center!"
Apple of their eye -- Loved the story of Robinson dining in a New York restaurant during the NBA Finals. When Robinson got up to leave, everyone in the room applauded with respect. Announcer Bob Costas went on to say that typified the class of the city.
Let's not jump to conclusions.
In New York, they applaud Latrell Sprewell, too.
On tune -- Oh, good. Another "crossover" athlete. Now boxer Oscar De La Hoya is going to be a recording star. Seems there was a bidding war to sign him to a record contract. I'll be waiting at Media Play with bated breath.
But what I'm really waiting for is "Chris Dudley Sings Jim Nabors' Greatest Hits."
Cooking up a fight -- There's a move afoot to match Mike Tyson against George Foreman in a fight of former contenders. Tyson is supposed to make $25 million for his trouble.
Let's see, you have an ex-con who did time for rape. And you have a 50-year-old has-been who does infomercials for cooking products.
With guys like this, who needs wrestling?
Bargain hunting -- Think your seats are expensive at the Delta Center? Check out the new Staples Center in Los Angeles, scheduled to open in October. The place is selling luxury suites, ranging from $197,000 to $300,000 per season. All but a dozen or so of the 160 suites have already been sold.
Mmmmm. Pricey.
But I understand you get to meet Stojko Vrankovic.
About face -- Karl Malone held a "Fan Appreciation Night" a couple of weeks ago. He also had a "Fan Appreciation" sale at his dealership. Seems the Mailman has everyone feeling better after last summer's upheaval.
Give me a Land Cruiser and I'm willing to forget the whole thing ever happened.
