Francesc Burgos, a Catalonian artist, will exhibit, as part of his MFA project, large ceramic sculptures at the Gittins Gallery, 161 Art Building on the University of Utah campus. Burgos' work explores formal aspects of discs, planes and edges, as well as space, character, poise, permanence and transition. Reception for the artist will be Friday, July 16, 5-9 p.m.
Art Access will show "Statistically Unusual Eyes," featuring oversized portraits by Anne Vinsel. After being informed by her doctor that her vision was being impaired, Vinsel decided to change how she saw her art. Her exhibit runs from July 14 through Aug. 13.
Wayne Thiebaud, internationally known artist with ties to the West, is exhibiting "Wayne Thiebaud: Works on Paper From the Family Collections, 1955-1998" at the Carr and Off-Stage Galleries in Idaho Falls through Aug. 30.
The Sunstone Foundation annual art auction will be Thursday and Friday, July 15 and 16, from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Salt Palace. The auction features fine works by Mormon and Western artists in all media. Photographer Kent Miles and writer James N. Kimball will also present photographs and stories from their forthcoming book "Mormon Women: Portraits and Conversations, 1996-1999" at the Sunstone symposium on Friday, July 16, 2:15 p.m. For more information, call 355-5926.
Peter Fillerup, Heber City, was one of five Western sculptors chosen as a finalist in vying for the honor of rendering a bronze likeness of Chief Washakie to stand in the Statuary Hall of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. Chosen from a field of 25 artists applicants, the five were selected based upon slides and supporting documents.
WORKSHOPS, LECTURES AND CLASSES
The Utah Museum of Fine Arts will present a workshop on Saturday, July 17, beginning at noon. "An Artful Afternoon: The Ins and Outs of Buildings" will provide children of all ages and their families with a day filled with hands-on creative art activities, entertainment and fun food. Some of the interactive activities will include designing and building miniature furniture using special clay, designing and planning building facades, building sand castles in baby pools, designing architectural columns with special tubes and gigantic chalk drawings.
