LEHI -- A paraglider dropped into a canal south of the Point of the Mountain and apparently drowned when his water-logged parachute prevented his escape.
Craig Christiansen, 43, of Riverton, landed in the Murdock Canal located east of I-15 Monday evening. His parachute apparently filled with water and may have pulled him under, said Lt. Ron Fernstedt, spokesman for the Utah County Sheriff's Office.
He was sucked through the siphon on the east side, under the freeway and eventually pinned up against the grate about 400 feet from the freeway on the west side. He was found by an employee for the Provo Water Users Association.
He was transported by the Lehi Ambulance department to the American Fork Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 9:15 p.m.
