West Valley police have released the name of the man fatally shot by an officer after a 35-block high-speed chase through West Valley and West Jordan.
Scott D. Randell, 27, Sandy, was shot multiple times by a West Valley officer in the cul-de-sac of a West Jordan neighborhood, 7175 S. 2470 West, West Valley Police Lt. Lance Call said. The shooting happened about 2:30 a.m. Wednesday.Police believe Randell was one of two men who fled from police several hours earlier after being stopped while driving a reported-stolen car.
During the search of the area, Randell sped by police on a motorcycle and failed to stop when pursued by police, Call said.
When the chase culminated in front of a West Jordan home, Randell allegedly pointed a gun at the two officers who had pursued him, Call said. One officer opened fire, striking Randell in the chest.
The name of the officers involved in the shooting have not been released by police. Neither officer was injured. Only one was believed to have hit Randell with bullets. Call said both officers have been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation of the shooting.
In 1996, Randell was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on multiple felonies, including burglary, sex abuse of a child and aggravated assault.
