The new assembly building of the LDS Church will be named the Conference Center, it was announced Friday.
The First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints decided on the name at their regular Thursday meeting. The 21,000-seat structure, which occupies the entire city block just north of Temple Square, is set for completion by April 2000. Church officials confirmed Friday that the date remains the goal despite damage to the roof and front wall of the building caused by the collapse of a crane during the Aug. 11 tornado.
Project manager Tom Hansen said trees, paving materials and irrigation systems are already being put in place as part of the rooftop landscaping, one of the building's most unusual features.
