I need to respond to an article in the Deseret News recently, titled "Catholics prosper in Mormon Vatican," written by Lynn Arave. This short article dealt with relationships between Catholics and the LDS Church in the Salt Lake Valley and told about how the Catholic Church first came to Utah. Lynn Arave apparently interviewed a deacon at the Cathedral of the Madeleine, Owen F. Cummings. I found the article interesting and informative until I came to the last paragraph.

There, once again, a reply to the age-old question: Are Mormons Christian? Cummings indicated that there are different families among the Christian churches, but in their different doctrines, Mormons seem to not be Christian, but yet due to their high moral code, it would put us Mormons clearly above many other Christian faiths.Mr. Cummings, I clearly do not believe in the Godhead as you do in your Catholic faith, but I would not for one instance claim that your faith is not among the Christian churches. I believe in God the Eternal Father; in his son, Jesus Christ; and in the Holy Ghost. I believe that Jesus is the Savior and Redeemer of mankind and that he is literally the son of God. Now tell me, sir, how does that make me a non-Christian? This goes for the Baptists as well, who were out in Salt Lake not too long ago preaching the same false information.

We are The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. When will you people of other faiths quit trying to tell us what we are and are not? We are Christians, we believe in Christ, we talk of Christ, and we rejoice in Christ. You are spreading false information when you continually call and refer to the LDS church as a non-Christian church. We serve others with not only our tithing and other financial donations but with food, clothing, housing, jobs and time. Isn't that what Christ did? How in the world can this not be a Christian church?
