LOGAN (AP) -- With 7,000 students, Utah State University boasts the largest of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' Institutes of Religion in the nation.
The Logan university narrowly edged out Utah Valley State College in Orem."We were No. 1 for many years," said Logan institute director Brent Farley. "Then UVSC beat us out. But last year we were back in the No. 1 spot."
Farley said he expects USU's institute program to be the largest again this year, though it is a matter of time before UVSC surpasses it.

The figures did not include Brigham Young University or Ricks College, both church-owned schools. Since religion courses are a mandatory part of the curriculum, the schools don't have affiliated institutes of religion.
