Live from Lincoln Center (8 p.m., Ch. 7): The New York Philharmonic opens the 1999-2000 season.

Stark Raving Mad (8:30 p.m., Ch. 5): Disappointing new sitcom.

48 Hours (9 p.m., Ch. 2): A report on a slick con-man.

Third Watch (9 p.m., Ch. 5): This frantically paced new show about cops, firefighters and paramedics is from the producers of "ER," which explains the similarities. Be aware that it's also violent and replete with sexual dialogue.
