Crystal pays big $$ for Mantle's glove

Billy Crystal once wanted to be Mickey Mantle. Now, at least, he's got the glove.

Crystal bought one of Mantle's old gloves at a Sotheby's auction of baseball memorabilia for $239,000, far exceeding its pre-sale estimate of $10,000 to $20,000. The Yankees legend wore the glove around 1960.

At an unveiling of a red granite monument to honor Mantle in 1996, Crystal recalled how as a 9-year-old boy in 1956 he watched in awe as Mantle blasted a home run off the right-field facade at Yankee Stadium.

"That day," Crystal said, "I knew I wanted to play baseball. I wanted to be Mickey Mantle." Mantle died in 1995.

Chef lends a hand to Meals on Wheels

Chef Wolfgang Puck answered the call when it came time to create the 10 millionth meal for the St. Vincent Meals on Wheels program.

"Ten million meals is something Los Angeles can be proud of," said Sister Alice Marie Quinn, who started the program in 1977 by making a pot of stew for 83 senior citizens.

Puck prepared stir-fried chicken with vegetables in the Meals on Wheels' kitchen at the St. Vincent Medical Center.

The nutrition program delivers hot meals to 2,100 people a day.

Letterman, Walters get Ventura to talk

After meeting with students at Harvard University next week, Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura is heading to New York City for a more prosaic purpose -- an appearance on the David Letterman show.

Ventura's visit with Letterman, along with a planned interview with Barbara Walters, comes less than two months after he said he was cutting back on media interviews.

He said in August that he wouldn't talk to national media unless reporters ask him about Minnesota issues.
