SALT LAKE CITY--

Laura Lee Smith, 40, of Salt Lake City, Utah died January 22, 2000 in Salt Lake City, Utah due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident.The daughter of Merle and Mariel Sims Smith, she was born on March 21, 1959 in Ogden, Utah. She graduated from Morgan High School and from Brigham Young University with a bachelor's degree in English. She later earned a Master's degree in English from the University of Utah and had also spent time serving as an intern with Senator Jake Garn.

She was involved in many activities that showcased her musical talents including the Young Ambassadors, Mormon Youth Chorus, the Dan Carter Singers, as well as accompanying many different musical groups. She loved reading and the Arts. She excelled in many areas such as sewing and needlework and enjoyed genealogy and temple work.

She was currently employed at GE OEC Medical as a Human Factors Engineer. She had also worked at First Health, The Ensign as an assistant editor, WordPerfect and Novell. In addition, Laura Lee taught at Salt Lake Community College.

An active member of the LDS Church, she served as ward organist and in other various callings. She also contributed to several lessons in the current Family Home Evening manual. Laura Lee was active in the Northern Utah singles group and was involved with organizing and editing their newsletter.

Laura Lee was kind and compassionate and was always helping and serving those less fortunate than she was. She loved all animals, especially her dog Grendel.

She is survived by her father and step-mother, Merle and Pat Smith of Morgan; a brother, Justin (Michele) Smith, Ogden; step-sister, Heather Palmer, Clinton; stepbrothers, David (Kelly) Palmer, Green River, Wyo; Stephen (Terri) Palmer, Rock Springs, Wyo; nephews, Brennan, Josh, Jared, Justin, Cameron, Caden and Cooper; and nieces Ashton and Alexandra. She was preceded in death by her mother, Mariel Sims Smith.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Morgan Stake Center, with Bishop Michael Glauser officiating. Friends may call at the Walker Mortuary in Morgan, Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Interment, South Morgan Cemetery.
