George H. Smedley, 70, a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, returned to his Father in Heaven, Thursday, January 27, 2000 surrounded by his family, after a short struggle with cancer.
He was born March 10, 1929 to Bernard W. and Ella Mae Smedley in Clearfield, Utah. He attended Syracuse Elementary, North Davis Jr. High, and graduated from Davis High School in 1947. He served in the Western States Mission for the LDS Church. Upon returning home, he was drafted into the US. Army where he served in the Korean War. After his release from the Army, he attended BYU graduating in 1957 with a B.S. in Education.
On June 8, 1954, while attending BYU, he met and married the love of his life, Eldora Ash, in the St. George Temple. After graduation, he built his first home in Syracuse. He taught school at Washington Jr. high, Mount Ogden Jr. High, North Davis Jr. High, and Layton High School. On December 31, 1954 his loving wife Eldora, returned to our Heavenly Father, and on March 19, 1976 he married Midge Fisher, his high school sweetheart. The following year they were sealed in the Ogden Temple.
Throughout his life, he was an active member of the LDS Church, and served in many stake and ward callings. He was a valiant home teacher. He served on the Syracuse City Planning commission and on the Syracuse City Museum council. He was an accomplished craftsman and he found great joy in serving others.
He is survived by his loving wife, Midge of Syracuse; and his seven children, Charlene Pewtress, Arizona; George (Cathy) Smedley, South Ogden; Jim (Dodie) Smedley, West Jordan, Sheila (Kevin) Bowler, North Ogden; Clair (Kristy) Smedley, Syracuse; Cynthia (Ray) Canonico, Clearfield; and Ryan Smedley, Ogden; five step-children, Sherry (Kent) Fullmer, West Point; Carol (Eddie) Brewer, Texas; Steven Fisher, Carey (Margo) Fisher, West Point; Kevin (Sherie) Fisher, Clearfield; 15 grandchildren, 14 step grandchildren, and five step great-granchildren. George is also survived by his mother, Ella Mae Smedley, Clearfield; two sisters and three brothers, Arlyn (Eldean) Smedley, Idaho; Lavell Thayne, Syracuse; Milton Smedley, North Ogden; Thayne (Ellen) Smedley, Idaho; and Sheryl (Robert) Allred, Clearfield. Preceding him in death were his wife, Eldora; father; brother-in-law; and two sisters-in-law.
The family would like to thank the doctors and particularly Judi Worley, RN, and Brien Grignon, HHA, of Hospice For Utah.
Funeral services will be held Monday, January 31, 2000 at 11 a.m. at the Syracuse 6th Ward Chapel, 2500 South Bluff Road. Friends and family may call on Sunday from 6-8 p.m. at Lindquist's Layton Mortuary, 1867 North Fairfield Road, and on Monday from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the church prior to the services. Interment, Syracuse City Cemetery.
