Many art exhibits planned at libraries in S.L. County

A number of art exhibits are planned during January and February at Salt Lake County libraries.The work of local and visiting artists will be displayed. All mediums are represented. Galleries are open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Here's the schedule:

East Mill Creek Library -- Photographs of Marguerite Roberts, award-winning photographer, through Feb. 29.

Holladay Library -- Pastels and watercolors of Elwin Sedwich of the Intermountain Society of Artists, through Feb. 29.

Riverton Library -- Oil paintings of Marilyn Heed, who is known for her paintings of horses and other animals and fantasy compositions, Jan. 11 through Feb. 15.

Riverton Library -- Utah Quilt Guild show, a collection of colors and patterns, through March 21.

Sandy Library -- Exhibit by Gary Prazen, sculptor of miners. Exhibit will show the significance of mining in Utah, through Feb. 29.

Tyler Library -- Acrylics by Marla Duggins of the Intermountain Society of Artists, through Feb. 29.

S.L. libraries to offer classes on navigating the Internet

Several free classes will be offered at Salt Lake City libraries during coming weeks in how to navigate the Internet.

No reservations are necessary for the courses, some of which are taught in Spanish. Those unable to attend a scheduled class in English may call 524-8200 to schedule a training session. Spanish-speaking patrons should call 524-8287.

Anderson-Foothill Branch, 1135 S. 2100 East -- Feb. 5, 10:30 a.m.

Chapman Branch, 577 S. 900 West -- Jan. 22 and Feb. 26, both at 10:30 a.m.

Day-Riverside Branch, 1575 W. 1000 North -- Feb. 12 in Spanish at 11:30 a.m.; and Feb. 12, 10 a.m.

Main Library, children's department, 209 E. 500 South -- Jan. 14 and Feb. 11, both at 2 p.m.

Main Library, nonfiction department, 209 E. 500 South -- Feb. 2 at 7 p.m.

Sprague Branch, 2131 S. 1100 East -- Jan. 15 and Feb. 19, both at 9 a.m.

Sweet Branch, 455 F St. -- Jan. 29 and Feb. 26, both at 10 a.m.

Utah Safety Council training in CPR begins on Saturday

The Utah Safety Council is now offering CPR training to the public in the Salt Lake area. The course will be held Saturday, Jan. 15, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Cedar Park Business Complex in Murray.

Each student will be instructed and certified in National Safety Council Adult, Child and Infant CPR. The program is nationally accredited and is approved for use in child-care programs in Utah.

Cost for each class is $30 per person. Preregistration and prepayment is required. Class space is limited. To register or get more information on this class or future first aid and CPR classes, call the council at 262-5400, Ext. 307.

2-hour sessions planned on landscaping, horticulture

If this year when you've decided to tackle the landscape of your existing home or a new home, an instruction course from people with expertise in the field may provide just the help you need.

Residential Landscape Design will be offered by members of the Utah Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects through the University of Utah Life-Long Learning program.

Beginning Tuesday, Jan. 18, and continuing through March 14, licensed landscape architects and horticulture professionals will teach two-hour sessions on topics such as site analysis, plant materials and their use, elements of design, construction techniques, water conservation planting and maintenance.

In addition, the final (ninth) session will be a one-on-one critique by local landscape architects. The course has proven to be effective in helping homeowners and others do the work and save money, chapter officials say.

Instruction will be given from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the University of Utah Annex Building, located at the corner of Wasatch Drive and South Campus Drive and just east of the Huntsman Center. The cost is $99 plus a $15 supply fee.
