MEN'S GOLF: After battling cold and windy conditions, BYU's seventh-ranked men's golf team finished sixth at the Taylor Made Red River Shootout at the Dallas Athletic Club.
The Cougars were led by seniors Jesse Hibler and Billy Harvey who finished 13th and 17th respectively. BYU who has either won or been in contention to win every tournament this season found itself in a strange position after the first two rounds-the middle of the pack.
But the Cougars finished strong, jumping from 11th to sixth place after the final round.
BYU finished sixth at last year's Red River Classic as well. The Cougars return to action next Monday as they compete in the prestigious Jerry Pate Invitational in Birmingham, Ala.
BASKETBALL: The first chance to see the 2000-2001 BYU men's and women's basketball teams will be late Friday evening as the Cougar teams tip off their official practice season at the fifth annual BYU Midnight Madness in the Smith Fieldhouse. There is no charge for admission but seating is limited, with the doors opening at 11 p.m. Early entrance V.I.P. seating is also available at 10:45 p.m. to fans who pick up a V.I.P. ticket at Hogi Yogi or attend the BYU women's volleyball match earlier Friday against Air Force at 7 p.m.
Midnight Madness, which will be hosted by KSL television's Alema Harrington, will have the theme M:NC2A (Mission NCAA), as both the men's and women's teams are starting seasons with the potential to earn NCAA tournament berths. The event not only serves as an opportunity for fans to get their first look at this year's BYU men's and women's basketball teams but also provides interactive contests that allow fans to participate and take home money and prizes, such as a $2,000 computer system guaranteed to a lucky winner or a shot at $10,000.
There will be 6,000 Krispe Kreme donuts given to fans while they last and a chance during the event to win free Krispe Kreme donuts for a year. A variety of contests and prizes for the fans including the UCCU Twirl and Hurl for Cash, Champion Car Care Musical Chairs, Teriyaki Stix Sumo, The Canyons Ski Scramble, Gold's Gym $10,000 shootout, Adeya Computers free throw contest and Mad Dawg Cycles Slam Dunk Survivor contest.
TENNIS: At the 2000 Men's ITA All-American Championships in Stone Mountain, Ga., BYU's Carlos Lozano stunned the No. 1 seeded player, Erfan Dhanjari of UCLA, 6-2, 6-2, in the round of 64 to move on to the second round in the qualifying draw.
Sixteen players advance from a qualifying draw that starts with 64 players. Lozano will play Phillip Stolt, of Illinois, on Wednesday.
If Lozano wins, he will join Gert Vilms in the main draw. The main draw includes 48 players, with 16 more that qualify from the qualifying draw. Vilms is already in the main draw.
In doubles, Vilms and Lozano are the No. 1 seed in the qualifying tournament. They defeated Henry Beam and Dan McCain, 8-6, and will play Bart Scott and Takeshi Itoh on Wednesday.
CROSS COUNTRY: The BYU men's and women's cross country teams will travel to Ames, Iowa, the site of the 2000 NCAA Cross Country National Championship, to compete in the Pre-national Invitational meet Saturday.
Returning to action after two weeks off from competition, the Cougar men will look to solidify their spot in the national rankings. BYU moved up one spot in the poll this week to take over the No. 8 position. The Cougars entered the rankings two weeks ago at No. 9, after placing third at the Roy Griak Invitational in Minneapolis.
After taking one weekend off, the BYU women will also be returning to action in the Iowa meet. The Cougars won the Collegiate Division race at the Stanford Invitational on Sept. 30 in Palo Alto, Calif.
