Lewis Andrew Peterson, M.D., 71, of Salt Lake City, succumbed to illness that followed a traumatic brain injury he incurred in 1994. He died Oct. 20 at Alta View Hospital.

Lewis was born Sept. 20, 1929 in Fairview, UT to Lionel Lewis and Clista Lasson Peterson. He grew up in Fairview and graduated from North Sanpete High School with honors. He attended the U of U, earning a bache-lor's degree in sci-ence and affiliating with Beta Theta Pi. Graduated from the University of Utah School of Medicine in 1954. Served as a medical officer in the Navy. Fulfilled his residency at Stanford University, where he was a teaching assistant and chief resident in ophthalmology. In San Francisco, he met and married Betty Jo Greenawalt. Their marriage was later sealed in the LDS Temple.

Lewis began private practice in ophthalmology in 1961, and from 1971-93 with his colleague, George Pingree, M.D., gave caring attention to hundreds of eye patients in Murray, UT. His professional service included work with glaucoma and cataract screening clinics, a surgery and teaching service project in Nepal, and numerous appointments in medical societies and with Cottonwood Hospital. He was a member of the LDS church, where he shared with scouts his enthusiasm for biking, marathon running, fly fishing, and duck hunting. He was a member of the New State Duck Club. Lewis was a kind, caring man with the utmost integrity. He was a devoted husband, a proud father, and loved to play with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his loving wife, Betty Jo; children, Andrew (Susanna Sonnenberg), Missoula, MT, Peter (Anne), Salt Lake City, Susan (Jim) Pfeiffenberger, Seward, AK, Lewis (Margaret), Santa Monica, CA; seven grand-children; and sisters, Miriam (Jerry) Mason, Brigham City, Cleone (Spence) Eccles, Salt Lake City, Catherine (Jack) Bryan, Newark, CA. Preceded in death by his brother, Albert; and parents.

Friends may visit the family at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 Highland Dr, Monday Oct. 23, 6-8 p.m. Services will be held at the Salt Lake Little Cottonwood LDS 1st Ward, 6350 S. Rodeo Lane (1545 E.) Tuesday Oct. 24, 11 a.m. A viewing will be held prior to the services at 10 a.m. Interment will be in the Fairview City Cemetery at approximately 3:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Ducks Unlimited, 699 E South Temple, SLC, 84102 or to the charity of one's choice.
