Donovan Herbert Van Dam, age 94, died peacefully at his son's home in Salt Lake City on Monday, Decem-ber 18, 2000.
He was born Dec-ember 5, 1906 in Salt Lake City, Utah, son of Herbert Van Dam, Jr. and Lydia Mary Baker and stepson of Lillieth Ann Smith Van Dam.
He married his beloved Ada Strong in the Salt Lake Temple, July 18, 1932. She preceded him in death in 1993.
He was a graduate of the University of Utah and a member of the R.O.T.C. He was called to active military duty from 1940-46 and attained the rank of Lt. Colonel. In his business career he earned the designation of Certified Property Manager. He was a lifetime member of the Sons of Utah Pioneers.
A devoted member of the LDS Church, Don filled a mission to the Netherlands from 1928-30. He served in the bishopric of the Stratford Ward and was a guide on Temple Square. From 1952-56 he served as president of the Netherlands Mission. Later he served on the high council of the Highland Stake and as a member of the stake presidency. Don served as assistant to the president of the Salt Lake Temple and served as first president of the Jordan River Temple with his wife, Ada, as matron, from 1980-85. Our dad loved the Lord, his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grand-children, and taught us well by precept and example.
He is survived by four children, Daryl (H.J.M.) Hoole, a missionary in Hong Kong; Donnette (Gail W.) Ockey, a missionary in Brisbane, Australia; Marvin R. (Sandy) and Lee H. (Holly) both of Salt Lake City; 25 grandchildren (three deceased) and 61 great-grandchildren; sisters, Margaret (Roland) Allen, Soda Springs, Idaho; Betty (George) Ebert, Salt Lake City; Doris (Sam) Bailey, Corvallis, Oregon; Lou Gundersen, Salt Lake City; and brother, Stephen Ralph (Gloria) Van Dam, Salt Lake City.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 27, at 12 noon in the Salt Lake Olympus 7th Ward Chapel, 4500 South and 2700 East. Friends may call Tuesday evening, December 26, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at McDougal Funeral Home, 4330 South Redwood Road, and from 10:30 to 11:45 a.m. at the church prior to the services. The burial will be at the Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.
