And then there were three.
Bingham. Cottonwood. Emery. The only three boys basketball teams left in the state that still have perfect records. There were four remaining until Valley was stunned on Saturday night. The Buffaloes (now 13-1) were shell-shocked at home, getting creamed 58-40 by Milford, of all teams. It was only the fifth win all season for Milford, which has nine losses. Even more amazing is that it was Valley's first loss in Orderville in two years.
Despite the loss, Valley remained at No. 2 in the 1A rankings, but there were changes in the other classifications.
Brighton, which has swung in-and-out of the rankings, found its way back into the Top 5 of Class 5A.
The Bengals -- sparked by the exceptional play of guard Mark Mawhinney -- are No. 4 after having beaten Alta and Jordan last week. The Beetdiggers fell to the fifth spot, and Viewmont dropped out after its loss to Cottonwood.
Class 5A has a few sweet showdowns this week, including rivals Layton at Northridge tonight. On Friday, Bingham goes to Riverton for their grudge match and Region 3 co-leaders Jordan and Mountain View will battle in Orem.
Lone Peak, fresh off a win over Provo, is the new squad to emerge in the 4A rankings at No. 5. The Knights host Timpview in a battle of Region 6 quad-leaders. They are tied atop the standings with Provo and Payson, who also play tonight, with two losses apiece.
Sky View jumped to the No. 2 spot after having edged Logan in a thriller and for whupping Weber. The Grizzlies are now the third-ranked squad.
San Juan is the only other new boys team in the rankings, as the Broncos come back in the 2A fold at No. 5.
As far as national rankings go, the Bingham Miners (14-0) found their way into another Top 25 poll. They are 20th in the FoxSports.com rankings and 24th in the National Prep Basketball Poll. Bingham is still sixth in the West in the USA Today.
GIRLS RANKINGS
The top-ranked teams remained the same this week, but each classification had a new team enter the rankings in the No. 5 slot.
In Class 5A, Mountain View can all but wrap up another Region 3 title if it defeats third-ranked Orem on Tuesday. The Tigers are the only team within two games of the Bruins. The new team to enter the rankings is Viewmont. Buoyed by the strong play of Kristen Crockett, the Vikings have moved to within a game of the Region 1 lead but have a tough game against Skyline Tuesday. Timpanogos dropped from the rankings after a 1-1 week.
Class 4A's top team Lone Peak continued its undefeated season with a 2-0 record last week. It can clinch at least a share of the Region 6 title with a win over Timpview on Tuesday.
Bonneville moved up to No. 2 after a 2-0 week, while Olympus leapfrogged to No. 3 after a win over then No. 2 Murray. Fremont replaces Region 5 foe Logan in the rankings after the Grizzlies lost a stunner to Sky View.
Pine View remained atop the Class 3A rankings but faces the Region 9 game of the season Tuesday when it travels to No. 2 Hurricane. Judge dropped out of the rankings after a surprising 1-2 week, allowing Region 7 leader Tooele to make its first appearance of the year at No. 5.
The ever-changing Class 2A rankings had a bit of stability this week as South Summit and South Sevier held onto the top two spots. Beaver moved up to No. 3, while Enterprise reappeared at No. 4, and North Sevier made its debut in the rankings at No. 5. Enterprise has big games this week -- at Parowan on Tuesday and home to Beaver on Thursday. North Sevier is unbeaten in the Central Division, owning wins over Manti and South Sevier. The North/South rivalry will be rekindled on Thursday when North Sevier plays at South Sevier.
Panguitch's grasp on the Class 1A top spot will be challenged Thursday, when the Bobcats play at No. 4 Wayne to determine the Region 15 champion. Altamont moved into the rankings at No. 5 after defeating then No. 4 Green River on the Pirates' home floor.
