Jon Val Westover, age 61, died February 5, 2000, following a long illness.
He was born on February 14, 1938, in Logan, Utah, to Arus and Miriam Westover. Graduated from Cyprus High School in Magna. Served a full-time mission for the LDS Church from 1958 in 1960 in the Southern States Mission. Married Karen Keetch, March 3, 1961 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Received a Bachelors degree in Secondary Education from the University of Utah in 1964. Masters degree in Education from Brigham Young University in 1981. Taught history/geography at Brockbank Junior High from 1964 to 1994. Church service includes serving as counselor in bishopric, stake and ward clerk, gospel doctrine teacher, and bishop of Spencer 4th Ward.Jon suffered for many years with failing health but bore all things with meekness and patience. He loved teaching junior high students and was selected as Teacher of the Year at Brockbank on two different occasions. Was awarded Certificate of Merit for Teaching Achievement by National Council for Geographic Education in 1979. Served as a mentor to many beginning teachers who respected and admired him.
Jon is survived by his wife, Karen; children, Val (Jennifer), Michelle (Chuck) Willis; grandchildren, Nick, Marc, Brenden, Emily; and sister, Shirlee (Eldon) Nye. Preceded in death by his parents.
Services will be held Thursday, February 10, 2000, at 12 noon in the Magna Central Stake House, 8181 West 3320 South. The family will receive friends Wednesday February 9, 2000, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Valley View Funeral Home, 4335 West 4100 South, and at the Stake House prior to services Thursday from 10:30 to 11:45 a.m. Interment: Valley View Memorial Park.
