We may not be movie stars, but that doesn't stop us from trying to look like them.

Hairstyles, it seems, are an example of life imitating art. And Utahns are on the cutting edge. They look to the stars for ideas on how to wear their hair.

We surveyed Salt Lake hair stylists to see what's hot, hip and happenin'.

Here's what their patrons are asking for.

For short hair, try Sharon Stone or Winona Ryder. Hair is the same length all over, but short, like three quarters of an inch. Bangs are equally short, but hair isn't clipped around the ear, giving it a softer look. Wear it slicked down with gel, slicked up with gel or not slicked at all. This style takes courage. "Not many girls will dare to do really short," said Holly Cemer of Shear Excellence salon.

For mid-length hair, look at Meg Ryan. "Everybody wants her haircut," said David Sargeant, proprietor of Sargeant Salon. Ryan's chin-length locks in her most recent movie, "Hanging Up," have chunky layers that give her hair a loose, carefree look.

Cindy Crawford is a role model for clavicle-length hair. It's slightly layered but the bottom is blunt, said Sargeant. "Her hair doesn't flip up and it doesn't turn under."

For long hair, it's model Stephanie Seymour, whose bangless tresses are reminiscent of the beatnik era.

According to Cemer, women are going for a controlled messy look. "It's kinda like they just got out of bed."

In that case, check out Bed Head shampoo, which a Deseret News colleague loves, although she's not sure whether it contributes to the bed head look.

And then there's color. Platinum is passé and blond has bombed. Women who color their hair are thinking along the lines of rich brunette. Or they're going back to a shade that's close to their natural color.

Dark hair with gold highlights, a la singer Jennifer Lopez, is also trendy.

Men, too, have jumped on the celebrity look-alike bandwagon.

They like singer Ricky Martin, whose hair kicks up in the front and lays flat on top, or actor George Clooney. His hair is the male version of Sharon Stone's but shorter with more precise edges.

Or there's Freddie Prinze Jr., whose hair is a variation on Ricky Martin's, but with longer sides. "It's pretty messy," said Breck Mitchell of Star 21 Salon. "Freddie Prinze Jr. is what the boys want and all the girls love him."

According to Thomas Welsh of Shear Excellence, men's hair color, like women's, is headed to the dark side. "I'm doing a lot of men's hair darker."

Interest in what's trendy is ageless. Women from 20 to 50 are intent on the latest styles, according to Sargeant. Women all the way up to 60 are asking for a trendy look, and some of them pull it off real well, he said.
