SAVANNAH, Ga. -- A school dance to celebrate a high school basketball championship ended in gunfire that left two teens dead and another wounded.
Three young men were shot as 300 people left the Beach High School gymnasium in Savannah about 11:15 p.m. Friday.Stacy Smalls, 19, died from gunshot wounds at a Savannah hospital shortly after the shootings. Officials said Smalls was not a student.
Ramone Kimble, a 16-year-old student at Savannah High School who was shot in the head, died shortly after 11 a.m. Saturday at Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, nursing supervisor Ellen Pinckney said.
Lamar Jenkins, a 16-year-old Beach High School student, was shot in the buttocks. He was treated and released from the hospital.
Savannah police arrested Darrell Ingram, 19, Saturday morning and charged him with murder and two counts of aggravated assault.
"Nobody knows at this point how it got started," said Robert Gilbert, associate superintendent of Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools. "It did not happen on the campus . . . it happened across the street, not on school property."
The dance -- a celebration of the Lady Bulldogs' state championship victory on March 3 -- was supposed to be restricted to students only. Officers don't know if the suspect or the victims attended the dance.
