LOFTON'S BACK: Kenny Lofton returned to the field Saturday less than four months after undergoing surgery on his left shoulder, starting in center field in Cleveland's final exhibition game.
The Indians said it was likely that Lofton would start in Monday's opener at Baltimore, but a final decision would not be made until Sunday.
"I thought he did good," Indians manager Charlie Manuel said. "He got the feel of being in the game. He didn't have to make any throws.
"If he feels like this tomorrow, we'll open the season with him," he said.
"This is the last hurdle," Cleveland general manager John Hart said. "He has been cleared by the doctors."
"It's been amazing (his recovery). The doctor said it was something that just doesn't happen. It's a medical miracle."
CANDIOTTI RELEASED: Knuckleballer Tom Candiotti was released Saturday from his minor league contract by the Anaheim Angels.
Candiotti, released by Oakland and Cleveland last season, was 1-2 with a 6.85 ERA in nine spring training games.
The 42-year-old signed a minor league contract with the Angels in January. He had been hampered by a nagging injury to his left knee last season, but had arthroscopic surgery in August and was feeling healthy.
The native of Walnut Creek, Calif. has a 151-164 career record with a 3.73 ERA. The right-hander had pitched in the major leagues since 1983, most recently with Los Angeles (1992-97) and Oakland (1998-99).

ARCHER OUT: Justin Huish, who won two gold medals in archery at the Atlanta Games, resigned from the U.S. Olympic team because of marijuana possession charges.
Huish said he did not want his legal problems to distract from the archery team's preparations for the Sydney Olympics.
He sent a letter of resignation this week to the National Archery Association. He remains a member of the National Archery Association, spokesman Bill Kellick said Friday.
