Orioles 4, Rangers 3

BALTIMORE — Jeff Zimmerman balked home the winning run in the ninth inning Friday night as the Baltimore Orioles beat the Texas Rangers 4-3 for their eighth straight home victory.

Cal Ripken led off the ninth with a single against Zimmerman (0-3), and pinch-runner Mark Lewis moved to third on Will Clark's double. With a 1-1 count on Greg Myers, plate umpire Ian Lamplugh called Zimmerman for a balk and Lewis trotted home.

Jeff Conine and Mike Bordick homered for the Orioles, who have not lost at Camden Yards since dropping their season opener to Cleveland on April 3. Bordick drove in two runs, increasing his league-leading RBIs total to 29.

Buddy Groom (1-1) pitched two perfect innings for the win.

Chad Curtis hit his third home run of the season for the Rangers, who have lost nine of 11.

WHITE SOX 3, TIGERS 2: At Detroit, James Baldwin pitched 7 1-3 strong innings for his fourth straight victory and Jose Valentin hit a two-run homer as Chicago beat Detroit.

It was the second game between the teams since their brawls Saturday at Comiskey Park, but the first since suspensions and fines were handed down Thursday by Frank Robinson, baseball's vice president of on-field operations.

Baldwin is the first White Sox pitcher to open a season 4-0 since Wilson Alvarez went 8-0 to begin 1994. Baldwin gave up two runs on six hits, walking two and striking out two.

YANKEES 6, BLUE JAYS 0: At New York, David Cone bounced back from a pounding in Toronto, holding the Blue Jays to three hits in seven innings for the New York right-hander's first victory of the season.

The Blue Jays managed only five baserunners and only one made it as far as second against Cone (1-2). He needed only 84 pitches to get through seven innings.

INDIANS 4, RED SOX 3: At Cleveland, playing Boston for the first time since collapsing in the AL playoffs in October, Cleveland rallied for three runs in the sixth inning to beat the Red Sox.

Dave Burba (3-1) pitched six solid innings and four relievers combined for three scoreless innings for the Indians. Steve Karsay pitched the ninth for his third save.

ROYALS 8, MARINERS 5: At Kansas City, Mo., Joe Randa, Carlos Beltran and Carlos Febles all drove in two runs and a crowd of more than 36,000 saw Kansas City beat Seattle for its seventh straight home victory.

Excluding season openers, the paid attendance of 36,317 was the biggest crowd for an April game in Kansas City since 1989. The Royals are an AL-best 9-1 at home.

ATHLETICS 5, TWINS 2: At Minneapolis, rookie Adam Piatt singled in two runs in a five-run seventh inning as Oakland beat Minnesota.

Gil Heredia (2-2) allowed two runs — both unearned — in six innings for Oakland, which won for the third time in eight games. Jason Isringhausen got the final four outs for his fourth save.

DEVIL RAYS 11, ANGELS 2: At Anaheim, Calif., Greg Vaughn broke out of a 4-for-33 slump with two homers and four RBIs, leading a 19-hit attack as Tampa Bay routed Anaheim.

Vaughn tied a career best with his fourth four-hit game and also matched a Devil Rays record for hits in one game. The 19 hits, off five Angels pitchers, are the most the third-year team has had in a nine-inning game — and the most ever in a road game.

Miguel Cairo had three hits and John Flaherty had a pair of RBI singles to help right-hander Esteban Yan (1-1) win for the first time in eight starts in the major leagues.
