W. Floyd Millet, a former coach, athletic director and three-sport athlete at BYU, died Saturday. He was 88.
While Millet played a significant role in the establishment of Cougar Stadium, the Marriott Center and the Cougar Club, he might be best remembered for guiding the BYU football team to its first-ever victory over the University of Utah.
That occurred during his only season as head coach, in 1942. The Cougars defeated the Utes, 12-7, in Salt Lake City, en route to a 2-5 season.
Millet played football and basketball and ran track for the Cougars from 1931-34. He was hired at BYU in 1937 as a football, basketball and track coach. Millet posted a 105-77 mark as head basketball coach from 1941-49. He was succeeded by Stan Watts, who died last April.
Millet was inducted into the BYU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1976.
Millet is survived by his wife, Vera, and four children. Funeral services will be held at noon Wednesday at the Oak Hills 9th Ward Chapel, 1960 N. 1500 East in Provo.
