WASHINGTON (AP) — Eugene M. Zuckert, secretary of the Air Force from 1961 to 1965, died Monday of pneumonia at age 88.
During his tenure as Air Force secretary, the nation was involved in the Bay of Pigs invasion and the Cuban missile crisis and saw its involvement in the war in Vietnam escalate.
His career in government service stretched back to 1937 when he started a three-year stint as an attorney for the Securities and Exchange Commission.

After serving in the Navy during World War II, he became a special assistant to the secretary of war for air in 1946, and then an assistant secretary of the Air Force from 1947 to 1952.
