The 2nd District Nominating Commission has announced the names of five judgeship nominees to fill the vacancy left by Judge Michael J. Glasmann's resignation.
The seven-member commission released the names Tuesday. Judicial nominating procedure requires the names to be released to the public 10 days before they are submitted to Gov. Mike Leavitt. The five nominees are Norman L. Ashton, Ogden, corporation counsel for Ogden city; attorney Robert J. Faust, Salt Lake City; 2nd District Court Commissioner Daniel W. Garner, West Point; 2nd District Court Commissioner Scott M. Hadley, Pleasant View; and Salt Lake County Deputy Attorney Ernest W. Jones, Roy.
The commission is accepting written concerns about any of the nominees at the Administrative Office of the Courts, 450 S. State. The written statements must be received by the office by 5 p.m. June 16.
The commission will review any public comments it receives, and it may request a further investigation or interview with any of the candidates.
Following this, the commission can remove any candidate from the list by a vote of six members.
The names remaining on the list will then be sent to the governor, who will announce his choice within 30 days. The governor's choice will be submitted to the state Senate, where it must be approved by a majority vote.
The vacancy comes after Glasmann resigned in April amid investigations by the Utah Attorney General's Office and the Senate Judiciary Committee. He was being investigated because of rumors of violations of professional codes and allegations of criminal activities, said Sen. Terry Spencer, chairman of the judiciary committee.
