Charles Ivan Sampson, husband, father, and grandfather, died July 11, 2000.

He was born April 22, 1909 in Delta, Utah, the first son and third child of ten, born to Benjamin F. and Mary Francetta Cook Sampson. He married Thelma Hansen on June 2, 1937 in the Manti Temple.

Charles attended school in Delta and graduated from Delta High School. He served his first mission for the LDS Church in Savai'i, Western Samoa from 1927 to 1930. When he returned he attended and graduated from the University of Utah. He taught school for a short time in Deseret. He also taught seminary in American Fork and served as area director in Southern Utah in the National Youth Administration.

He entered the military service in 1941, serving to 1946 and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army Air Corp. He was in the insurance business, employed by Equitable Life Assurance Society of New York in both California and Utah.

From January 1957 to July 1961, Charles was President of the Samoan Mission, which included Samoa, Fiji and the Cook Islands. He later served in Samoa as the first Temple President from 1982 to 1986. He also served as the sealing supervisor in the Provo Temple for 11 years.

He served in many church callings, as bishop, high councilman and high priest group leader. He also was active in the Utah County Red Cross program.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Thelma; his children: Doug (LeiMomi) Sampson of West Jordan; Elma (Richard) Bartholomew, currently serving a mission in Australia; Dean (Helen) Sampson of Orem; Dixie (Russell) Harward of American Fork; and Karen (Tim) Griffin of Denver, Colorado. He is also survived by sisters and a brother: Fontella Crafts of Salt Lake City; Mable Chapman of Gastonia, North Carolina; Betty Johnson of Delta; Merlin Sampson of Phoenix, Arizona; and Lou Etta Mortensen of Denver. He has 31 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Easton and three sisters: Melba June, Faires Miner and Roe Ann Gooch.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 15, 2000 at 11 a.m. at the Edgemont North Stake Center, 4300 North Canyon Road, Provo. Friends may call Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Berg Mortuary, 185 East Center Street and Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church prior to the services. Interment, Provo City Cemetery.
