BOUNTIFUL — Residents on this city's east bench got a nasty — and wet — awakening early Friday.
Someone opened three fire hydrants around midnight and left them open. Two were quickly discovered and closed, but one, at Devonshire and Bountiful Boulevard, was left open for several hours, creating a 15-foot-deep, 50-yard-long trench and washing away much of the street, curb and sidewalk.
The hydrant poured out an estimated 1.5 million gallons of water and caused an estimated $250,000 in damage.
The basement of a nearby home was filled with mud and water. A small army of volunteers helped the homeowner clear it away.
Police have no suspects. The Bountiful Police Department is offering a reward for information leading to the arrest of any one involved. Call 298-6000.
