Kevin Costner was in a different "Waterworld" when he and a diving buddy speared and hauled in a 58-pound California halibut off Santa Cruz Island.

The actor speared the halibut, but it was so strong it needed to be speared again. The dive fishing trip included Costner and his pal Tim Hoctor, a real estate broker.

Their halibut was a big catch, but not big enough for a record. The state's official diving record for California halibut was set in 1982 with a catch weighing 72 pounds, 8 ounces.
