LOGAN — A man pleaded guilty Friday to having sex with a 14-year-old girl.

Thomas Bennett of Logan was arrested in April on six counts of rape of a child and two counts of aggravated sexual abuse — all first-degree felonies.

Bennett pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of one count of rape of a child.

Bennett faces a minimum of six years in the Utah State Penitentiary without parole. He will be sentenced Oct. 26 and remain free on bail until that date.

In 1998, school counselors first reported that Bennett had been showering with the child, who was then 12 years old. According to the Cache County Attorney's Office, she denied the abuse and the investigation was discontinued.

More than a year later, the case again was investigated when a LDS Church bishop reported the allegations to police.

Although he originally pleaded not guilty to the charges, he admitted in court Friday to having sex with the girl between 1997 and 1998.
