PAROWAN (AP) — A Cedar City man has been sentenced to a year in jail and fined $1,000 for abuse of his then-7-year-old daughter.

Michael Kory Haueter, 34, began serving a year in the Iron County-Utah State Correctional Facility Monday after being sentenced by 5th District Judge Philip Eves.

Earlier this year Haueter pleaded guilty to two Class-A misdemeanor counts of child abuse and a Class-B misdemeanor count of lewdness.

Iron County Deputy Prosecutor David Doxey said Haueter was originally charged with first and second-degree felony child abuse.

The state's ability to prosecute Haueter was weakened by the disappearance of Haueter's daughter.

In three incidents, the girl suffered injuries to her head, genital area and buttocks, the prosecutor said. The incidents occurred between December 1996 and May 1997.
