TIJUANA, Mexico (AP) — A gunman shot to death a former Olympic marksman who was a candidate to become Tijuana's mayor.

Guillermo Castellanos Martinez was shot several times in the back by a gunman who was waiting in a car outside his house, said police official Hector Alcantar. He died on the spot Wednesday night.

Castellanos, an official with the federal Commerce Secretariat, had been a federal congressman and a state assembly member, as well as having headed a workers union.

He was among the candidates competing for the ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party's nomination for mayor of this gritty border city. The election will be held next year.
