PROVO — A man who fired five shots at his former girlfriend during a car chase last year is going to prison.
Robert W. Snow, 39, was sentenced to one to 15 years in prison by 4th District Judge Gary Stott for possessing a dangerous weapon as a restricted person (he was on probation at the time of the shooting), a second-degree felony. Snow was also sentenced to up to five years in prison for aggravated assault, a third-degree felony.
Snow, who married the victim in December in a jailhouse ceremony, pleaded guilty to the charges in November after admitting firing at the victim, who was his girlfriend at the time, during a domestic dispute in August. Snow was originally charged with attempted murder.
Police say that on Aug. 10, a heavily intoxicated Snow waited outside the south Provo apartment of the woman and that when she arrived home the two began arguing. Snow then fired a shot from a handgun into the ground, at which time the woman jumped in her car and sped off. Snow pursued the woman in his car, shooting at the woman's car during a 10-minute chase. At one point during the chase, the two cars collided.
As Snow's new wife, the victim urged Stott not to send her husband to prison, but the judge said Snow's violent and potentially deadly behavior was deserving of prison.
