June Swaner Gates died the morning of December 23, 2000 in her Polo Club home, Denver, Colorado; she was 79.

Born to Leland Badley and June Scowcroft Swaner in Salt Lake City, Utah, December 15, 1921, she attended high school at the Rowland Hall School for Girls and graduated with a bachelor's Degree in Humanities from Stanford University in 1943. Mrs. Gates married Charles C. Gates, Jr. on November 26, 1943. They spent 57 years together enjoying the great outdoors and traveling the world over. A leader in the Denver community, Mrs. Gates was a trustee of the Denver Botanic Gardens, a trustee of National Tropical Botanical Gardens and a supporter of children and the arts.

Mrs. Gates is survived by her husband, Mr. Charles C. Gates, Jr., her daughter Diane Gates Wallach of Denver, her son, John S. Gates of Aspen, and five grandsons. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Leland Scowcroft Swaner.
