Stuart Brandon Pett, "Stu", was born in Salt Lake City August 18, 1911 and died peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family, January 5, 2001. Stuart was the fourth son of Imer and Josephine Arnold Pett.
Stu graduated from East High School, Stanford University and the Babson Institute. After an internship working on the New York Stock Exchange, Stu returned to Salt Lake City to work as a stockbroker for the firm of Ure, Pett & Morris and later Merrill Lynch. He retired from Merrill Lynch in 1976 after 40 years of service in the brokerage business. Stu was a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy and proudly served during World War II on the U.S.S. President Jackson, the first ship to land combat troops during the first offensive on the Solomon Islands and later Guam, Guadalcanal, and Iwo Jima.
After the war, Stu returned to Salt Lake and married Marjorie Emma Nilson. They were happily married for 55 years. Stu was deeply devoted to his family and so proud of his children, "Suze", "Randy", "Rip", and "Rob". Stu enjoyed skiing and golf and excelled on Stanford University's Tennis Team and as the Captain of the Golf Team. He was a charter member of the Salt Lake Tennis Club and Willow Creek Country Club. Stu was an avid duck hunter and a longstanding member of the New State Duck Club, a place of personal contemplation. Stu was an active member of the LDS Church.
He is survived by his wife, Marge; sons Stuart Brandon (Virginia) Pett Jr., Richard Imer (Claire) Pett, Robert Nilson (Kathryn) Pett; daughter, Susan Nilson Pett; grandchildren, Amy, Jake, Max, Katya and "Robbie" Pett; and very special family member, Mary Mone. Stu was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Imer, Russell, Arthur.
Stu was a man of few words and the embodiment of "class". Those people who were fortunate enough to know Stu, knew a gracious, generous, dignified, and honest man. Stu was a true gentleman with a kind heart and wry sense of humor. He was greatly loved and will be greatly missed. "The smile in his eyes was a blessing on our lives."
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the 5 North staff of the University of Utah Hospital (Gigi, Sonja, Nancy, Annette, and Eva) and special thanks to Drs. Dunson, Shah, Maul, Pendleton and East.
Services will be 12 noon Mon. Jan 8, 2001 at the Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 S. Highland Dr where friends may call Sunday 5-7 p.m. and Mon. 10:45-11:45 a.m. prior to services. Interment, Salt Lake City Cemetery.
