Alberto Mendivil, a third-year medical student at the University of Utah, is among five college students across the nation to receive the Herbert W. Nickens Minority Medical Student Scholarships. The aid is offered by the American Association of Medical Colleges, which will present the awards during a November meeting in Washington, D.C.

The award recognizes leadership abilities and work to eliminate inequities in medical education and health care, as well as the academic achievements of the recipients.

Mendivil, who is from San Diego, Calif., will receive a $5,000 scholarship and certificate of merit. He is the first U. student to be so honored.
