TALLASSEE, Ala. (AP) — A helicopter flew into a power line and crashed into a river Thursday, killing two people, police said.

Carrie Lynn Treadwell, 26, and Marie Lovallo Treadwell, 57, both of Opelika, Ala., died at the scene, about 30 miles northwest of Montgomery, police said.

The pilot — James Allen Treadwell, 51, of Notasulga, Ala. — walked away from the helicopter, which crashed in shallow waters in the Tallapoosa River. He was hospitalized with head injuries.

Witnesses said the helicopter split into two pieces after flying into a power line that extends across the river, said Friendship Fire Chief Steve Dennis.

Marie Treadwell was James Treadwell's wife and Carrie Treadwell was his sister-in-law, police said.
